Google Search Console (GSC) remains one of the most important free tools for website owners, marketers, developers, and SEO professionals. It helps you understand how Google discovers, crawls, indexes, and displays your website in search results.
But Google Search is changing rapidly in 2026. With AI-powered search experiences becoming increasingly important, Search Console has also evolved to provide more useful visibility data.
One of the biggest recent developments is Google's Search Generative AI performance reporting, which provides insights into how websites appear in generative AI features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google announced the new reports in June 2026 and confirmed that the insights rolled out globally on August 31, 2026.
In this guide, we'll explain how to use Google Search Console in 2026, from setting up your website to analyzing keywords, fixing indexing problems, monitoring Core Web Vitals, and understanding your visibility in Google's AI-powered search experiences.
Google Search Console is a free service from Google that helps website owners monitor and troubleshoot their website's presence in Google Search.
You can use it to:
Monitor organic search performance
Find the keywords generating impressions and clicks
Check which pages Google has indexed
Identify indexing problems
Submit and monitor XML sitemaps
Inspect individual URLs
Monitor Core Web Vitals
Check mobile and HTTPS-related issues
Review links pointing to your website
Identify security issues and manual actions
Analyze Search and Discover performance
Understand visibility in Google's generative AI search features
Google's own documentation recommends Search Console as a key tool for understanding how your website performs in Google Search.
Before learning the basic workflow, it is important to understand what's new.
These reports provide information about your website's visibility within Google's generative AI experiences, including AI Overviews and AI Mode.
The reports can help you understand:
How often your URLs appear in generative AI features
Which pages are being displayed
Which countries generate visibility
Which devices are involved in Search experiences
How visibility changes over time
Google announced that these insights were rolled out globally to websites on August 31, 2026.
This is an important change for SEO because traditional rankings alone no longer tell the complete story of search visibility.
A page might generate valuable exposure through an AI-powered search experience even when marketers are primarily looking at traditional blue-link rankings.
This makes it easier to evaluate your overall Google visibility instead of looking at one traffic source in isolation.
A more complete measurement framework includes:
Impressions + Clicks + CTR + Conversions + Indexed Pages + AI Visibility + Content Quality
Google continues to emphasize helpful, reliable, people-first content rather than content created primarily to manipulate search rankings.
The first step is to create or access your Google Search Console account.
Add your website as a property and complete Google's ownership verification process.
Google requires verification because Search Console provides website-specific information and tools that can affect how a site appears in search.
Once verification is complete, Google will begin collecting information about your website.
For a newly added property, it may take some time before sufficient data becomes available. Google notes that newly added websites can take up to about a week to generate data.
The Overview section gives you a quick snapshot of your website's search health.
Use it as your starting point when checking your website.
Look for:
Search performance
Indexing problems
Recommendations
Core Web Vitals
Enhancements
Security issues
Manual actions
Search and Discover information where available
Instead of checking every report every day, use the overview to identify areas that need attention.
For many websites, a regular monthly health check combined with monitoring important alerts is a practical starting point.
The Performance report is one of the most valuable sections in Google Search Console.
It shows how your website performs in Google Search and allows you to analyze important metrics such as:
Clicks
Impressions
Click-through rate (CTR)
Average position
Google also allows you to analyze performance by queries, pages, countries, devices, and other dimensions.
Start by identifying your top search queries.
Go to:
Performance → Search results → Queries
Sort the data by:
Clicks: Find queries already generating traffic.
Impressions: Discover topics where Google frequently shows your website.
CTR: Find opportunities to improve titles and descriptions.
Position: Identify keywords where your pages are close to stronger rankings.
For example, if a page receives thousands of impressions but has a low CTR, you may have an opportunity to improve its title, description, search intent alignment, or overall presentation.
Google specifically recommends using Performance data to identify popular queries and understand which pages are effective.
One of the smartest ways to use Search Console is to discover keywords you are already appearing for.
Suppose you publish an article about digital marketing.
Search Console may reveal that your page receives impressions for related searches you did not intentionally target.
These keywords can become opportunities for:
Content updates
New articles
FAQ sections
Internal links
Supporting content
Service pages
Instead of guessing what people search for, use your real Search Console data to understand how Google connects your website with search queries.
This approach can be particularly valuable for local businesses targeting searches such as SEO Company in Coimbatore.
The URL Inspection tool helps you understand what Google knows about a specific webpage.
Enter a URL into the Search Console inspection bar to check whether Google can access and index the page.
You can use it to investigate:
Indexing status
Crawling issues
Canonical information
Page availability
Structured-data-related information where applicable
Live URL status
Google explains that URL Inspection can also be used to test the live version of a page and request indexing for an individual URL.
Use it when:
You publish an important new page
You significantly update an existing article
A page suddenly disappears from search
You fix an indexing problem
You migrate or redesign your website
You want to troubleshoot a specific URL
Remember that requesting indexing does not guarantee immediate inclusion or a particular ranking.
An XML sitemap helps Google discover important URLs on your website.
Go to:
Search Console → Sitemaps
Enter your sitemap URL and submit it.
For many websites, the sitemap is commonly available at an address such as:
/sitemap.xml
A sitemap should contain the URLs you want search engines to discover and index.
However, submitting a sitemap does not automatically mean every URL will be indexed. Google still evaluates pages based on its crawling, indexing, quality, and search systems.
Google recommends updating your sitemap when you add new content and using Search Console to monitor how your website's indexed pages develop over time.
The Page Indexing report helps you understand which pages Google has indexed and which pages have problems.
Look for issues such as:
Crawled – currently not indexed
Discovered – currently not indexed
Duplicate pages
Pages blocked by robots.txt
Pages with noindex directives
Server errors
Redirect-related issues
Do not assume that every non-indexed URL is a problem.
Some pages should intentionally remain out of Google's index, such as certain utility pages, duplicate URLs, or private areas.
The goal is to make sure your important, valuable pages can be crawled and indexed.
User experience remains an important part of maintaining a healthy website.
Google Search Console provides a Core Web Vitals report that helps website owners identify performance problems affecting real-world user experience.
Pay attention to:
Loading performance
Interactivity
Visual stability
If Search Console identifies problems, work with your developer to investigate the affected page templates and improve technical performance.
However, SEO should not become a race to optimize isolated metrics. A fast website also needs useful content, clear navigation, strong relevance, accessibility, and a good overall user experience.
Search Console also provides a Links report that helps you understand internal and external linking patterns.
Use this information to identify:
Important pages receiving internal links
Pages that may need stronger internal linking
External sites linking to your content
Commonly linked pages
Also check the Manual Actions and Security Issues sections when necessary.
These reports can help identify serious problems that require immediate attention.
Search Console should not be treated as a report you open only when traffic falls.
Use it as a continuous SEO feedback system.
A practical monthly workflow is:
Check clicks, impressions, CTR, rankings, and search queries.
Identify pages losing visibility and pages gaining impressions.
Review indexing, sitemap status, Core Web Vitals, and URL issues.
Review available generative AI performance information and identify which pages receive visibility in Google's AI-powered experiences.
Then turn those findings into your next content and optimization plan.
Search Console provides data, but the real value comes from what you do with that data.
For example:
High impressions + low CTR
→ Improve your page's search-result presentation and relevance.
High CTR + low impressions
→ Investigate keyword demand and expand relevant content.
Good rankings + low conversions
→ Improve the landing page and conversion experience.
Important page not indexed
→ Investigate crawling, canonical, robots, noindex, or technical issues.
AI visibility appearing for certain pages
→ Study the topics and formats that are being surfaced and strengthen the usefulness, clarity, originality, and authority of those pages.
This is why SEO in 2026 requires more than simply adding keywords to a page.
Google Search is becoming increasingly complex. Businesses now need to monitor traditional organic search, technical SEO, content quality, user experience, local search, and emerging AI-powered search experiences.
For businesses targeting customers in Tamil Nadu, working with an experienced SEO Company in Coimbatore can make it easier to turn Search Console data into an actionable SEO strategy.
Instead of simply reporting that rankings increased or decreased, a professional SEO team can analyze:
Which keywords matter to your business
Which pages generate qualified traffic
Why pages are not being indexed
Which content needs updating
Where technical SEO problems exist
How competitors are performing
How your website can improve its search visibility
How your content can remain useful as AI-powered search evolves

Google Search Console has evolved far beyond a basic ranking-monitoring tool.
In 2026, it can help businesses understand their search traffic, discover keyword opportunities, troubleshoot indexing problems, monitor website health, and—most importantly—start measuring visibility within Google's emerging generative AI search experiences.
The latest generative AI performance reports make this especially important. Google has now rolled these insights out globally, giving website owners another way to understand how their content is appearing across modern search experiences.
The best approach is simple:
Create useful content → Make it technically accessible → Monitor Search Console → Analyze the data → Improve your pages → Measure results → Repeat.
If you want sustainable organic growth, don't treat SEO as a one-time activity. Use Google Search Console regularly, learn from your actual search data, and continuously improve your website.
For businesses searching for an SEO Company in Coimbatore, Blazingcoders can be positioned as your digital growth partner for building a search-friendly, user-focused, and future-ready online presence.

Yes. Google states that its generative AI search features are built on its existing Search ranking and quality systems. Therefore, fundamental SEO practices such as creating useful content, maintaining crawlability, and ensuring pages are eligible for Google Search remain important.
Open Search Console → Performance → Search results and select the Queries dimension.
You can analyze the queries that generated impressions and clicks for your website. You can also compare dates, pages, countries, and other available dimensions to identify SEO opportunities.
An impression means your website appeared to a user in a Google search experience, while a click occurs when the user clicks through to your website.
Comparing impressions and clicks helps you calculate and understand your click-through rate (CTR).
A newly added website may need some time before Search Console generates sufficient data. Google says a newly created site or newly added property can take up to a week to generate data.
If your website still has no data, check that you added the correct property and that your website is accessible to Google.
